Whole Red Lentil Daal

Very easy, very healthy, Whole red lentil daal.


1 cup whole red lentils – wash it, don’t soak

4 cups of water – you can add hot water to start the cooking process

1 teaspoon of turmeric powder

Salt to taste – start with 1 teaspoon

Puree together:

3 tomatoes

1-2 green chilis

1 inch ginger

add puree to daal

1 medium red onion chopped

2 whole red chilis

1 teaspoon coriander powder

1 pinch of asafoetida (optional)

4 garlic cloves

mix, cover, bring to low and let simmer

add water if desired

slow cook for an hour

serve with roti, rice or naan

Optionally, make tarka (tadka):

1 teaspoon oil

1 whole red chili

1 teaspoon cumin seeds

finely chopped garlic and ginger – how much is up to you – not too much!

cook for a minute until golden

add to daal
